Discworld Comes To ScummVM
Friday, 06 June 2008. Gaming.
ScummVM have been promising to support the 'Tinsel' engine, as used by Discworld 1 and 2. Since October 2005 they have reportedly got the rights to go ahead with it and are currently awaiting receipt of the engine source code, however three years down the line and no joy... so I look elsewhere.

Oh me of little faith... Only three months after I talked you through how to get the 1995 DOS game Discworld working on a mac using Boxer, when news reaches me via James Woodcock that the original Tinsel engine source code used in both Discworld 1 and 2 has been received by the ScummVM team. This means that hopefully in the near future the cross-platform emulator that lets you play amongst others, Sam & Max Hit the Road, Simon the Sorcerer, and the Monkey Island series, will also transport you to the Discworld to play one of my favorite games.
According to Eugene Sandulenko (_sev), one of the developers of ScummVM, the source code is in fantastic shape making the process a lot simpler, but still a lot of work no doubt. I can also report that it is currently being worked on already and as for when we will see a working version? Well it will be released when it is ready is the best answer I can give you at the moment.
Of particular interest is the work of a few talented individuals who have created the Wii Homebrew Channel which lets you run unsigned homebrew software from an SD card or via WiFi on your Wii. One of the applications that has been ported to the Wii is... ScummVM. Now I know homebrews are legally suspect, invalidate warrantee and have the possibly of total system corruption and no future official updates... But, the idea of playing Discworld using the Wiimote is just so terribly appealing.
